Three design concepts and corresponding scenarios were developed based on the initial research outlined in the research poster. These were designed to be high level ideas and solicit feedback on the findings associated with the right side of the presence-in-absence model. Feedback analysis has pointed towards Hello There as the concept with the most potential to move forward with. Feedback on Hello There and relevant comments from Traveling Book and Our Day are summarized below.

Ideas for features

Some of these ideas are coming from the feedback, others are being added as they are brainstormed.

  • allow other forms of messaging beyond just audio (graphics, photos, text)
  • multiple ways of indicating status of the message
  • using a mobile phone is more private than a computer
  • perpetual messages
  • messages for anyone (restaurant reviews)
  • ability for recipient to turn it off, i.e. explicitly not receive messages
  • textual subject headings for audio messages (labels for audio, allow for easy indexing)
  • what happens when there is more than one message in a particular location?
  • message expirations times
  • pausing all un-received messages (turning it off when you're visiting)
  • sender should be able to re-listen to sent messages
  • sender should be able to cancel unfound messages
  • sending of message instantly (useful because it's still stored in system then)
  • location as input (leaving a message from a phone at a particular location)
  • non-location based messages (time based)
  • where are the messages stored?
  • calendar view
  • is the archive a shared space for both of them? individualized?

Positive

  • element of surprise, reminds me of leaving secret notes in places
  • short messages are always fun
  • can help bring back specific memories about a time when we were in a place together
  • like a scavenger hunt
  • surprises are the best and most memorable moments
  • centralizes storage of all messages
  • a surprise messages would be a great pick-me-up in a place where you don't expect it

Negative

  • recording audio on a computer is difficult
  • requires cellphone
  • messages would have to be general or referencing the past
  • would feel compelled to respond which would feel like a phone conversation
  • only one person really has a connection to a place
  • could invade privacy, i.e. leaving a message at home and seeing he didn't get it until 5am
  • romantic scavenger hunt/technological surveillance
  • price of messages
  • disappointment if you don't get one every time you go some place
  • messages are out of context, meaning changes in the future perhaps
  • doesn't work well if you don't know the geographical area

Relevant feedback from other concepts

  • acting as a memento in the future
  • everything stored in a special and shared place is important
  • reduce pressure to respond right away (consider connotations)
  • allow some use of it to be really quick and easy
  • what can I learn from twitter/tumble logs?
  • storing and sharing things in one single shared system
  • offline publishing of communication?
  • avoid "feeding the machine" / yet another things to update
