Presence in absence

In essence that's what communicating with some at a distance is all about. I'm trying to tease out the different types of presence in absence though in order to understand the range of options.

Tele-presence
The most like really being there. Tele-presence involves both parties engaged together in real-time, mediate by technology.

- telephones, videophone

Experiential presence
Indirect presence is achieved through a sensory experience either caused by another or invoking memories of shared experience with another.
- Examples
- 6th sense lamps, the smell of a familiar perfume, visiting important locations

Presence through objects
This is a metonymic type of presence where an object stands in for a person, invoking thoughts of them and causing them to be present in your mind.
- Examples
- letters, mementos, jewelry.
